INSIGHTS from
Rabbi Daniel Korobkin

A new year! A new beginning! I write these words deeply humbled as I begin my tenure at the BAYT, aware of the great legacy that precedes me and of the heroic efforts of the builders – Rabbi Taub and the entire community – of this magnificent kehillah.
The new year is a time for new beginnings, and so it is apropos that I begin right before the High Holidays. When embarking on any new endeavor, we try to strike the proper balance: on the one hand, we take with us our experiences and strengths of the past, but on the other hand, we try to make a clean break and new start so that our current effort won’t have any of our negative “baggage.”
We’re not alone in this attempt to find balance; when Hashem created our universe, He had the very same challenge.
The Midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 3:7) relates that when G-d created our universe, He didn’t start from scratch; He had actually created several “worlds” before our own. He ultimately destroyed these worlds before creating our present world. But all these prior worlds were necessary precursors to the creation of our present universe. This is why, after the six days of creation, the Torah states, “The L-rd saw ALL that He had made, and behold, it was very good.” Hashem didn’t just marvel at His present creation; He also appreciated His past creations as necessary prototypes for His new world.
Through creation itself, Hashem was modeling for us how we should view new beginnings and new starting points.
I invite you to join me on this new adventure – a new year and a new beginning, especially for the BAYT. We will reflect upon the great legacy and accomplishments of the past, and will use those strengths to build a new era of growth for our community. Please be a part of it, since we will only succeed by working together! Help me continue the greatness of the past and build a new greatness for our future – not only for ourselves, but for our children and our children’s children.
Karen and I extend to you our heartfelt blessings for a Ksivah VaChasimah Tovah – may you and your loved ones be signed and sealed for life, good health, and nachas for the coming year!
